While he has lived in Chicago most of his life, he has studied abroad throughout the U.K. He is currently in an MFA candidate at the Art Institute of Boston at Lesley University. He lives and works here in Staunton.

This latest series is influenced by my transition from Chicago to a rural environment. My work has always stemmed from an interest in a break down or deconstruction of the urban landscape. I am naturally attuned to what is happening in those places, and yet I yearn to be surrounded by nature. The demand for both arises within my work. Personal elements also emerge from the visual fogs that are abundant in my work. Ideas for my work begin with a collage of photos and drawings from nature and the inner-city. Mental processes, such as imagination and memory, allow me to continue. The desired result is something rich and strange.

"Army of One"

"Untitled: Orange Diptych", better image on the way!

This is Eliza's work to the left, mine to the right, so you can see the set-up better.

"Army of One" and "Pack"

"Pack" and "Yoga Lesson"

"Yoga Lesson"

Laure Stevens-Lubin

Laure Stevens-Lubin received her MFA in painting and drawing from James Madison University. She also holds an MA in English from New York University and received her BA from Barnard College in New York. She lives in Lexington, Virginia but is spending the year in Kodaikanal, India.

This body of work comprises a series of meditations on the enigma of the human place in the world---our inescapable interconnectedness and our yearning for autonomy. I explore the interstices between science and spirituality, self and society. Technology has allowed us to see far into space, back to the universe’s beginnings, and deep into ourselves, to the DNA that maps our being. How does this extended knowledge inform the myths we make today? How does it cause us to revision our world?
In my work, separate panels are juxtaposed to create poetic interactions, signaling both fragmentation (of the self and the environment/habitat) and interconnection. The palette metaphorically echoes the philosophical underpinnings of my work. The fiery base represents the web of energy that creates and enfolds us, that sparks the storms on our planet and the electrical storms in our brains when our neurons fire. The dark oil represents matter, the meat of which we are composed. The tension between the light and the dark reflects the tension between self and other.
My intent is to reframe mythical elements to engage an ever more complex interaction between “human” and “nature.” Through the process of painting I begin to apprehend with my own hand the repeated cycles of existence and extinction, and how scientific narratives fuse with the mythological to form new ways of knowing.

"BOOK LOVERS"

"LEAP OF FAITH" series

Patrick Loehr

Patrick Loehr is a Denver based artist working in a variety of media including painting, drawing, installation and animation. Patrick received his MFA from the Art Institute of Boston in 2009 and is currently the Chair of Art & New Media Design at the Community College of Aurora in Denver, CO.
In the Manipulated Memories series he is defacing family snapshots to examine the ever-shifting role photography plays in contemporary culture. Digital technology has situated photography amidst the most subjective (and subversive) forms of visual communication. Despite this, photography still clings to elements of its mythological status as the objective truth holder. Across the complex dynamic of contemporary artistic mediums, photography has become the destabilizer, the subversive sibling, the masked invader that exists (and is reflected) in all forms of visual language.
In the Theatrical Posters series he examines the concept of social and cultural conventions as associated with the idea of “community”. As a collective group, the community defines boundaries and establishes thresholds of “normality”. In this project, I present fictitious community based projects (theatrical productions) which clearly breach boundaries of taste and decorum. They intentionally seek to be absurd, grotesque, unfamiliar, inappropriate, out-of-touch, and pathetic. Confronted with these abortions on the norm, the viewer might reflect upon, and perhaps asses the validity of, the boundaries set by their own “community”.
Oil on Photographs:
"Granny"
<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5389174115344838114" style="WIDTH: 320px; Resin painting is a type of performance art. There is also an element of danger added as the fumes are sweet but deadly. The process begins with the mixing of the resin and its catalyst; a chemical reaction ensues and time becomes an important dimension in the work.

The challenge is to control the flow of resin using heat, cold, wind, gravity and viscosity as artistic tools. Syringes, needles and a propane torch are the resin painters brushes. The paintings are temperature dependent and exude an organicity that defies their inanimate status. The polymerized painting portrays its temporal history as it captures the slow flow of resin. These paintings continue to move after human hands have ceased to touch them. Their final destination can’t be known until a day after starting the painting, when all Brownian motion has ceased and the flecks of paint are trapped like a fly in amber. The painting you see is the final scene of a moving picture whose history is encoded in layers of resin.

Prints are avalible for all of Erics work.
